What to Expect During an Emergency Visit

Lexington Medical Center offers 24-hour emergency care. We know that an emergency visit isn't always expected and can be a scary experience. We will do our best to make your visit as comfortable as possible for you.

We realize that waiting to have your emergent condition evaluated can be challenging and frustrating. It is our desire to see every patient as soon as possible.

Step 1: Triage

When you arrive, you will be greeted by a patient care representative who will take some information about your symptoms. You will be escorted to a triage nurse, who will assess you and prioritize you according to the medical severity of your symptoms. This means patients are not necessarily seen on a first come first serve basis. Although this can be frustrating, it is done this way so we can provide the safest and most effective care possible.

Early Tests

We may have a provider on staff who orders necessary tests before you see the doctor. This makes the wait time more productive and saves you time. For more common symptoms, our nursing staff may initiate this testing for you.

Medical Concerns

If you feel that your medical condition is changing, or if you have any other medical concerns that were not addressed during triage, please feel free to contact one of our triage nurses and have them reassess you.

Step 2: Treatment Area

You will be taken into a treatment room where you will be prepared for your visit with the physician and greeted by one or more nurses, who will obtain additional information.

Step 3: Exam

You will then be examined. Staff will assess, diagnose and treat your current medical condition.

Step 4: Diagnosis and Treatment

After your care, it will be determined whether you can be safely discharged or if you will need to be admitted to the hospital for further care. You will receive a personalized care plan that will be explained to you.

Arriving to the Hospital

We recommend the following tips to lessen your wait times and to get treatment as quickly as possible.

No Food or Drink

Do not eat or drink anything before you speak with the triage nurse as this could affect your care and delay treatment.

Share Medications With Nurse

Let the triage nurse know about any and all medications, vitamins, herbal supplements or substances that you may be taking.

Check With Nurse Before Using Restroom

Please check with the triage nurse before using the restroom in case a specimen is needed.
